I’m not a fan of Valentine’s Day. It’s hard to say that without feeling like a cynic. I’d argue it’s because I’m actually a true romantic. You see, I think our expression of love should not be constrained to an arbitrary day. Nor do I think we should make a deliberate effort to celebrate only one kind of love.
And yet, we live in a reality in which we must contend with Valentine’s Day.
Maybe you’re like me, and you’re not about it. Maybe you’re the sort who would love to be all cute with a boo thing on the 14th.
Regardless of where you fall, it can be a challenging day of the year to be single. I also think it’s a great opportunity to reflect and get creative.
The fact is that our lives are filled with all kinds of opportunities for love. Love amongst friends. Love of self. Love of God. We get to give and receive love in so many ways.
Here’s the thing–I think you’re swell. I think you are worth celebrating. And I think the many expressions of love that exist in your life are worth celebrating.
I also believe in making room for the… messier emotions. For grief, resentment, anger, sadness, and all that jazz. These feelings don’t need to be a source of shame. In fact, they are part of being human.
Let’s take a beat together and consider how to set you up well for Valentine’s Day.
